Turner Writer to Sign New NASCAR Book at Turner Public Library

Turner resident George Campbell will be signing copies of his new book, Busch North Scene: A Ten Year Retrospective, at a book signing being held from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Turner Public Library on Saturday December 11, 2010. The book signing will part of a full day of events at the Leavitt Institute Open House.

The Turner Historical Society will also be hosting a craft fair downstairs with various Christmas related items for sale, including wreaths and centerpieces. They will also have coffee and cider for sale from the kitchen. The library will end their annual Silent Auction bids in the afternoon as well. The library will also hold Story Hour for kids at 10 AM with Mrs. Claus arriving sometime in the morning to read a story to the children. The library will be serving corn chowder and chili with homemade rolls on the second floor, which is where Campbell will be signing books. There will be both soft cover and hard cover copies of the book available.

"The book just debuted a couple weeks ago and has had a great response so far," Campbell said. "The book has been selling very well to both race fans and people looking for a Christmas gift for a race fan. I've had a couple fun book signings in surrounding communities, and have been looking forward to having an opportunity to do one in my hometown. I think the Winter Festival at the Library is a perfect time and place to do that and I am honored to be invited to be a part of the event."

Campbell covered auto racing for a variety of national and regional publications in the 1990's. In 1999 he started his own news print publication, Busch North Scene. His goal was to cover NASCAR in the northeast region of the country with the newspaper. Within two years, George and the staff members had grown the paper into the number one selling NASCAR newspaper on news stands through out much of New England.

The Ten Year Retrospective book recaps the racers, teams and events that shaped the publication and the NASCAR Busch North Series during the 2000 decade. The book has fun and informative personal reflections from George and Busch North Scene staff members, as well as many of the personalities that made the series popular in the decade.

George was raised in Mechanic Falls, Maine, where he attended Elm Street School before graduating Edward Little High School in Auburn, ME. He eventually settled in Turner, Maine, where he has resided for over twenty years.

"Living in Maine has required a lot of long distance traveling to cover NASCAR for the past fifteen years," George said. "But during that time, not only have I been able to cover hundreds of great events. I have had the pleasure of getting to know many NASCAR stars and personalities from the northeast."

The book gives NASCAR fans from New England an inside look at the stars from the region during the late 1990's and the 2000 decade. Within the books 330+ pages are over 125 photos mixed with personal reflections and amusing anecdotes on the drivers and events. Among the drivers covered in the book are Maine racers Ricky Craven, Andy Santerre, Joe Bessey, Tracy Gordon and Kelly Moore. Turner racers Mike and Ben Rowe are also mentioned.
