The true story of Henrietta Lacks and her family are told by Skloot after 10 years of research. Henrietta was riddled with cancer that originated in her uterus and spread throughout her body. Doctors removed cells from infected areas of her body to be used in research. They are known world wide as HeLa cells, and are still being used today.

Henrietta was one of a family with a history of poverty, lack of education and neglect. As you read, you will ponder the question, should this family receive compensation for the use of cells without family knowledge or consent.
